Today we are gonna see about Service Mapping in SNow. You can get a clear idea on service mapping, service map, types of service mapping and data reconciliation. SNow CMDB is one of most usable application in most of the organization.
In every company there are few application services such as email system, Web application, Server, SharePoint, Proxy, Data storage, Networking, Information Security etc. and these application services will use some supporting devices, software applications, servers, hardware, licenses etc.
Service mapping in SNow can discover all the Application Services accessible in a company and then through top-down mapping approach or technique service mapping can build a map of all the network devices, servers, devices and config profile used in those application services.
This comprehensive map can show Configuration Item’s and also the relationship within the application service. All the services discovered by service mapping cmdb will be hold in (cmdb_ci_service_discovered) table.
We can use Service Mapping in cmdb only if discovery is activated and configured. To find application services and devices, cmdb service mapping depends on discovery and mid server. Service mapping uses the results discovered and uses mid range Servers to communicate with CIs in a company. CMDB service mapping will create service maps and creates a CI in the cmdb representing a business service. Type service mapping on the left side filter navigator you will get the result as shown below.
Service mapping discovery
service mapping discovery
- Pattern Based Discovery
- Traffic Based Discovery
Pattern are used to determine applications, properties of the applications and connections to other alternate application. CMDB service mapping uses patterns to find and map configuration item’s in cmdb. Those applications that cannot be determine using pattern,it will use traffic based discovery to spot those applications.
To perform traffic based discovery it will use traffic based connection to collect network statistics. Traffic based discovery is used at initial stage and it creates require inclusive map.
Bottom-up/horizontal approach(Discovery) and top-down/Vertical approach (Service Mapping)
What I perceive is that discovery focuses on Infrastructure and Service Mapping in cmdb focuses on Business Services. Discovery finds all the infrastructure and application, however it doesn’t relate something to business services however on the other side service mapping in cmdb discovers solely those applications and infrastructure that directly supporting a business service so map their relationships too, so thus it means Service Mapping is lot of precise when compared to discovery.
Data Reconciliation and Data Identification
Data can be fetched from different types sources such as structured data or unstructured data. Structured data can be identified easilyand unstructured data which is unmanaged and difficult to identified. So, Data identification is a process that is employed to spot the data and additionally perform data analysis whereas Data reconciliation could be a verification process from that target data is compared with the data source.
In servicenow cmdb ci can be created or updated through different sources such as manually, cmdb import sets, discovery , etc. So, SNow cmdb data identification and data reconciliation facilitate to keep up the integrity of the SNow cmdb.
I hope this information gives you transient understanding of service mapping in servicenow.
